Body Glove SURGE is a brand which is a collaboration of two different companies: Body Glove International and PacificHealth Laboratories, Inc. Body Glove International was created in 1953 and specializes in all things that are related to water sports; their products can be found in fifty countries internationally, and their company sponsors a number of pro surfers. PacificHealth Laboratories, Inc. was founded in 1996 by two scientists, and is focused on helping to manufacture products that improve sports nutrition. Together, these two companies created Body Glove SURGE, an all-new, all-natural energy shot which has been shown to be clinically superior to major energy shot brands in both performance and taste.
I received the three flavors of Body Glove SURGE All-Natural Energy Shots for the purpose of writing this review. The three flavors that Body Glove SURGE sells are Grape, Tropical Berry, and the all-new Peach Mango. You all know that energy is one of the most important things in my life right now, as I struggle to keep alert and focused through all my heavy nights of studying for medical school. Sometimes I just can’t stay awake on my own, because the long hours start to drain you. I used to pound down energy drinks and 5-Hour Energy Shots, especially during our exhausting exam weeks. This is really not something I prefer to do, because I’m not a huge fan of the taste of many major energy drinks, and I don’t always like the way they affect my body. Needless to say, all-natural Energy Shots such as Body Glove SURGE are a great alternative to chemical-ridden formulas, so I was eager to give them a try.
Body Glove SURGE contains no chemicals, and instead uses the combination of high antioxidant fruits (such as blueberries, pomegranates, goji berries, etc), green tea, honey, coconut water, and other powerful ingredients to help drive an increase in energy. Not only is it a great alternative for late night studying or long days in the office — it is also specially formulated for athletes and very active people who want to add a kick to their routine or workout. Pro athletes such as 2012 Ironman winner Leanda Cave and the world record holder for surfing the largest wave, Garrett McNamara, endorse Body Glove SURGE. When taken before a workout, Body Glove SURGE can help increase your endurance by fueling muscle energy stores and relieving some of the muscle and mental fatigue. It also helps to restore and rejuvenate after a workout. It has been clinically proven to improve focus, concentration, and reaction time.
What can some of the specific ingredients in Body Glove SURGE do?
The green tea and theanine in Body Glove SURGE help support healthy blood sugar, keep your immune system running at top speed, and have antioxidant qualities. The coconut water helps rehydrate and replenish with electrolytes after a long day or a workout. The honey gives your body protein that it needs to rebuild muscles after a workout and to reduce muscle strain. Lastly, the many fruits in Body Glove SURGE, such as pomegranates, grapes, cranberries, chokeberries, apples, bilberries, and mangosteen help to reduce oxidative stress. There are 140 mg of caffeine included as well.
How does Body Glove SURGE compare to some of the major energy shot brands? They included a comparison to the very popular 5-hour Energy on their website, and here’s the difference:
5-Hour Energy falls flat in comparison to Body Glove SURGE when you consider ingredients and nutrition value. 5-Hour Energy contains harmful chemicals like phenylalanine and artificial sweeteners like sucralose. It also contains taurine, which actually reduces mental alertness (this shocked me, because I used to use 5-Hour Energy on intense study nights..eek!). 5-Hour Energy does not have any natural ingredients and contains mostly chemicals. It has no electrolytes and no helpful antioxidants. Body Glove SURGE, on the other hand, is ALL-NATURAL and does not contain any harmful chemicals. It contains the beneficial antioxidants and green tea energy. 5-Hour Energy is not proven to enhance performance, increase alertness, extend endurance, increase reaction time, or to deliver rapid and extended energy…all of which Body Glove SURGE is!
Each flavor of Body Glove SURGE Energy Shot comes in a 2.5 fl oz. bottle and contains the following ingredients:
Water, honey, organic agave syrup, organic cane sugar, whey protein isolate, glycerin, natural flavors, natural malic acid, sodium chloride, natural caffeine from green coffee bean, stevia leaf extract, green tea leaf extract, coconut juice powder, and standardized extracts of grape, cranberry, pomegranate, blueberry, apple, mangosteen, bilberry, chokeberry, and goji berry.
The Tropical Berry Body Glove SURGE Energy Shot has 50 calories, 0g of fat, 0mg of cholesterol, 65mg of sodium, 9g of carbohydrates, and 2g of protein. The Peach Mango Body Glove Energy Shot has 40 calories, 0g of fat, 0mg of cholesterol, 65mg of sodium, 9g of carbohydrates, and 2g of protein. The Grape Body Glove Energy shot has 50 calories, 0g of fat, 0mg of cholesterol, 65mg of sodium, 9g of carbohydrates, and 2g of protein.
My favorite flavor of Body Glove SURGE Energy Shot was the Tropical Berry, although all three were really good. They didn’t have that “chemical” taste like many energy shots do — even though they aren’t energy “drinks”, so I know that taste shouldn’t matter quite as much. I have a lot of trouble choking down some of the major brands of energy shots, especially since they taste too artificially sweet, and they hurt my throat on the way down. Body Glove SURGE Energy Shots don’t taste exactly like candy, but you can tell that they aren’t jam-packed with chemicals, and they aren’t harsh on your throat as they go down. The flavors are a lot better than other are offered by other companies — any time I don’t have to wash an energy shot down with water, it’s a good thing. 🙂 I definitely don’t miss the Niacin facial flushing and warmth that comes with 5-Hour Energy shots. In terms of performance, I’d say that Body Glove SURGE is right on par. I tried taking one of the shots before working out, and I felt like it gave me a boost in energy for a few hours and less muscle strain afterwards. I feel like this is definitely the better option for any athletic or very active people looking for that extra something. I tried another Body Glove SURGE energy shot before studying (I am not in school for the summer, but I just started to prep myself for the coming year), and it did a pretty decent job of keeping me awake. I felt like it didn’t last for five hours (I took it pretty late), but it did help keep me mentally focused and alert, which is more than I can say for other brands. To me, it felt like a trade off of an hour or two of energy for a product that is better for your body and doesn’t feel like poison. It feels like natural energy, and something I could take often without having to worry about long-term effects. I love the ingredients, and the fact that this energy shot is so versatile. I like that it uses Stevia instead of the chemical sucralose, which I am trying to get away from. It is also nice to see that you can have three a day, so I could always get more energy by taking another shot.
Right now, you can purchase any flavor of Body Glove SURGE on their website, here. A six-pack of one flavor will cost you $13.99 and a twelve-pack of one flavor is just $27.99. Body Glove SURGE is also available in many natural food, sports, and wellness stores throughout the country, so make sure to check out any of those stores near you!
